Over the past year or two there has been a heated debate over controversy surrounding whether or not hip-hop is dead. This whole conversation especially started to pick up steam with the release of legendary rapper Nas’ album “Hip-Hop is Dead”. On the surface the answer is quite simple, of course hip-hop isn’t dead. It continues to drive the culture of pop music and influence every artist on the globe. In the past 10 years hip-hop has quickly penetrated its way into all aspects of pop culture and become something that could rival rock music or any other genre. So what is really all of the fuss about hip-hop being dead?
For many the theory of hip-hop being dead is simply a way to address the fact that lyricism does not seem to be nearly as important as it once was. This has many hip-hop heads worried that the line between a pop artist and rapper will be blurred. This already starting to happen and forces the industry to go with what sells rather than stick to hip-hop rooted in artistic integrity and talent. So is it the end of good song writing in hip-hop happening? Maybe. One thing that is for sure is that the death of hip-hop is definitely nowhere in sight.
